The recycling business has always rewarded companies that understand markets, relationships and logistics. Today, that is no longer enough.
Freight costs move. Labor costs rise. Mill requirements change. Commodity pricing shifts. Customers expect more visibility and better information. Technology is changing what companies can learn from their own operating data. And decisions that once could be made largely through experience and intuition increasingly benefit from a much deeper level of analysis.
For recycling companies, mills and large multi-location fiber generators alike, simply keeping up with all of that change can consume a tremendous amount of time. The bigger opportunity is figuring out how to get ahead of it.
That is a major part of what is happening today at FV Recycling and Mid America Paper Recycling. And it creates opportunity from several directions, not only for the customers and suppliers we serve, but also for experienced industry professionals and business owners thinking about what their own next stage of growth might look like.
Building More Than Recycling Capacity
The combination of FV Recycling and Mid America Paper Recycling brought together two organizations with deep experience in recovered paper, recycling operations, transportation, customer support and mill relationships.
The opportunity goes beyond simply becoming a larger recycling company.
The organization is building on that foundation by bringing together people, technology, market knowledge, logistics capabilities, data and the financial resources of Jones Capital.
That matters because the questions customers are asking these days are becoming more sophisticated. Where are transportation costs hurting most? Are loads consistently shipping at optimal weights?
Are certain locations producing avoidable deductions or rejected material? Could a different pickup model improve economics? Are recyclables being directed into the markets that produce the strongest net return?
What patterns exist across dozens or even hundreds of locations that would be almost impossible to see by looking at individual transactions? Those aren't simply recycling questions anymore. They are data questions, logistics questions and business-analytics questions.
Putting Better Information Behind Better Decisions
Recycling companies generate enormous amounts of data through everyday operations: weights, grades, pickups, freight charges, destinations, deductions, rejections, pricing and location-level performance.
Historically, much of that information has been difficult to analyze at scale. But that is changing today. New analytical capabilities, including emerging AI tools, are creating opportunities to study very large operating data sets much faster and identify patterns that may otherwise remain buried.
FV and Mid America Paper Recycling are actively using these technologies to support better decision-making for both the company and the businesses it serves.
And the objective isn't technology for technology's sake. It's finding practical ways to identify light freight costs, optimize loads, reduce unnecessary transportation, uncover lost value, improve operating efficiency and help our supplier-partners make smarter decisions about their recycling programs.
Some of the most powerful capabilities being developed today may never be visible from the outside. But our partners will simply experience the result: better information and reporting, better strategic recommendations and a recycling partner capable of seeing opportunities others may miss.
Scale Matters. So Does Agility.
A larger recycling platform can bring more market relationships, greater geographic reach, more expertise and more resources to customer challenges. But scale only matters if those capabilities translate into better decisions and better results.
The goal is to combine the entrepreneurial responsiveness that has always characterized successful recycling businesses with the systems, information and resources increasingly required to compete in a challenging marketplace.
For our partners, that can mean more ideas and more ways to create value from their material. For talented people and business owners within the recycling industry, it can create new possibilities for growth.
Opportunity Looks Different From Every Side of the Table
Every company and every person in this industry is facing a slightly different version of the same question: What comes next?
For a box plant, it may mean finding better ways to manage recovered fiber while other production inputs continue to increase.
For an experienced recycling salesperson, it may mean asking what could be accomplished with stronger systems, broader capabilities and more resources behind them.
For an independent recycling business owner, it may mean considering how to take a successful business into its next chapter, and whether all of that growth has to be built alone.
There doesn't have to be one answer. But these are exactly the kinds of conversations worth having as the industry changes.
Let’s Talk About What Comes Next
TAPPI Corrugated Week brings together many of the people who understand these changes best. Customers. Suppliers. Box manufacturers. Recycling professionals. Industry veterans. Entrepreneurs. Sales leaders.
We'll be there, too.
The FV Recycling and Mid America Paper Recycling team looks forward to talking about recovered fiber, market conditions, and all the challenges companies are trying to solve today.
But we're equally interested in talking about what comes next. If you're attending Corrugated Week and thinking about what the next chapter might look like for your recycling program, your business or your career, come find us at Booth #543.
Sometimes the most valuable conversation at a trade show isn't about today's business. It's about what we might build next together.
